Party Dress Cake (644)
This past Thursday we competed in a cake contest sponsored by the Somerset Art Association. The “Let Them Eat Cake” contest’s theme was the celebration of spring. We created the “Bloom of the Ball” which was a nature inspired party dress adorned with sugar roses, vines, and leaves hanging on a dress form.
The cake was a sour cream orange zest cake filled with pistachio and white chocolate buttercream. It was a really great experience creating this 46″ tall cake, although its transportation to Bedminister Fiddler Elbow’s country club was a little daunting…not to mention our air brush machine overheated and blew out every fuse in our store the night before! This forced us to hand paint the cake…but it all worked out in the end.
We were so excited to win the “Show Stopper” award. I couldn’t have done it without my staff. Thanks for all of your hard work…and keeping me sane through this past reaaaallly long week!

I’ve been a silent reader and admirer but I’ve just gotta speak up this time. How did you do it? It’s not a piece of cake. (pun intended). Absolutely amazing.

I stumbled upon your page this morning and canNOT believe this! I would never even attempt to do something like this, but would LOVE if you typed a mini- tutorial – - – only because I have NO CLUE how this was done! Is the dress form cake also? HOW MANY hours (yours and staff) did this take? I’m going to bookmark your site and will be back many times. What an awesome cake!! Carolyn
Hi Anne
This is an amazing cake! And I say that as someone who has grown up around cakes. My mom shares your passion for designing and baking, and has likewise grown a business very similar to Pink Cake Box in Cebu, Philippines: Chedz Designer Cakes. She has been doing this since before I was born and now she has passed it down to my younger sister. Me and my bro recently made a website for her, inspired no less than by Pink Cake Box

Anne,
As a fellow decorator I have been an admirer of your work for sometime and have also been inspired by you on many occasions. This time, however, I’m speechless. This is just gorgeous. I can’t imagine how you delivered it, just the thought of it sends shivers down my spine. You and your team of artists really outdid yourselves this time in the most exquisite way.
Congratulations!
Melanie
Melanie – Thanks so much for your comment – it’s flattering to receive praise from other cake decorators. You are right delivery was a challenge – I had to sit in the back and make sure the cake held steady during the entire ride.
Carolyn – thanks for your comment. The cake was quite an effort and took a few days from start to finish. Most of the dress form was cake with the exception of the very top which we carved out of Styrofoam.
Nino – congratulations on your new website and store. Thanks for your comment.
Unbelievable! Your work is amazing!
