Party Dress Cake
This past Thursday we competed in a cake contest sponsored by the Somerset Art Association. The “Let Them Eat Cake” contest’s theme was the celebration of spring. We created the “Bloom of the Ball” which was a nature inspired party dress adorned with sugar roses, vines, and leaves hanging on a dress form.
The cake was a sour cream orange zest cake filled with pistachio and white chocolate buttercream. It was a really great experience creating this 46″ tall cake, although its transportation to Bedminister Fiddler Elbow’s country club was a little daunting…not to mention our air brush machine overheated and blew out every fuse in our store the night before! This forced us to hand paint the cake…but it all worked out in the end.
We were so excited to win the “Show Stopper” award. I couldn’t have done it without my staff. Thanks for all of your hard work…and keeping me sane through this past reaaaallly long week!

Apart from being absolutely breath-taking, how did you manage to keep the cake vertical?? It is really a wonder!
Oh, by the way, I just wanted to tell you that your cakes (all of them) are really inspirational to me…when it comes to make cakes for family and friends, your ideas are always the first that I look to for inspiration… thank you so much for putting them in you blog!
(I’d like very very much to have a cake done by you, but…alas…I live in Italy, and it would be a bit impossibile to ship the cake without problems! ;-))

Your cake is amazing I cannot believe my eyes… it sooo beautiful !!!! And even tough sour cream orange zest cake filled with pistachio and white chocolate sounds delicious I will not eat it, I would keep it as long as I could.

I stumbled upon your page this morning and canNOT believe this! I would never even attempt to do something like this, but would LOVE if you typed a mini- tutorial - - - only because I have NO CLUE how this was done! Is the dress form cake also? Carolyn - thanks for your comment. The cake was quite an effort and took a few days from start to finish. Most of the dress form was cake with the exception of the very top which we carved out of Styrofoam.
