Giraffe & Mouse Circus Themed Cake (1289)
Beverly and I attended the National Capital Area Cake Show this weekend in Fairfax, VA. We were super excited to win the circus themed live challenge!
We were up against some intense competition, who definitely made amazing cakes: Wayne and Jim from Swank Cake Design, Pat and Leah Jacoby from Patty Cakes and Courtney and Alaina from Cake Nouveau. Everyone’s cake was so different – Wayne did a really awesome ‘dark’ circus themed cake in blues, purples and black. Pat’s was a really fun circus cake with adorable clowns, a giant clown shoe and seal, etc. And Courtney made an amazing Alice in Wonderland meets circus cake that had really amazing detail. The competition was judged by Norman Davis and Zane Beg, Marina Sousa, Mike McCarey and Lauren Kitchens.
Our cake was called “Gigi’s Little Top Circus”. The giraffe, Gigi was about 3 feet tall, and stood on top of a ball. We completed her with a few pairs of faux eyelashes. I have to say, it is quite difficult applying false eyelashes to a giraffe!
The mouse circus surrounded her. We had the ‘side show’ : beared lady, Siamese twins, strong man, and ‘pudgy’ lady mouse
We had clowns, a tight rope walker, an acrobat, a performer, a mime, a stack of mice trying to catch Gigi, a ring ‘mouster’ and a ‘kitty’ tamer, dressed in a safari outfit. We even had one mouse running out from underneath the ball
Surrounding the cake were five tents (satellite cakes that we were required to include) that housed the ‘cheezession stand’, ‘ring mouster’, ‘performers’, ‘mouse house’ and ‘ side show’.
It was a lot of fun and we were so excited to be able to compete against great cake designers. On Sunday we also taught a great animal topper class. Thanks to everyone who helped us prepare for the challenge, especially my staff and of course Beverly who worked really hard all weekend !
Update: Here’s a video we hastily shot at the show. It’s a bit jerky so I apologize ahead of time:
