Cony Island is well-known for its amusement parks. Up until World War II, Coney Island was the larget amusement park in the US. It’s home to the second oldest wooden roller coaster in the world US -  the Cyclone roller coaster and a 400,000 lb. Ferris wheel named the Wonder Wheel.

This 2 tier birthday cake incorporates both these landmarks…the roller coaster and ferris wheel…into the design of the cake. We created it for a man’s 75th birthday who has fond memories of the park. The cake flavors included vanilla cake with raspberry chambord buttercream and red velvet cake with vanilla buttercream.

We were so happy to hear the cake was a hit. Here’s a message from the daughter-in-law of the birthday boy:

My father-in-law loved his birthday cake! What a beautiful work of art, and it tasted delicious! Let me tell you - he took a few of us on a day’s tour of that area last year, and we rode the Cyclone…boy, was that ride scary!!! Thanks, again for all of your hard work and creativity!

The Cyclone is not the Oldest Wooden roller coaster in the world - the actual oldest that is still in operation is in Germany. For the US It is The “Lepas The Dips” at Lakemont Park in Altoona PA. This is the Oldest operating wooden coaster. It was built in 1902. It has a small car that holds 4-6 people - goes only 10 mph and has no safety straps etc for the cars. The Cyclone was built in 1927 and is the 2nd oldest still operating coaster in the US . It was tagged as “Americas Favorite” in the 60’s. The Cyclone will open for 2009 season on April 5th. Palm Sunday.
